Spot X

Spot X is meant to give you peace of mind while you’re out exploring or adventuring. It offers several avenues for staying in touch. Convenient features make that possible without taking away from your outdoor experiences. For example, a special check-in mode lets you quickly and easily check in with a list of approved contacts like family. That way, you can let everyone know you’re safe and okay, quickly, and then get back to your adventures. You can also send SOS messages directly to the 24/7 search and rescue center, use cloud-based mapping to track your location at a specified time, share your device and info with approved contacts, and even access a digital compass.

It acts as a wayfinder too. That digital compass helps you stay on track but you can navigate using programmable waypoints to make sure you always have your own path to travel. This is a Globalstar satellite product that uses a constellation of satellites to communicate data. That means you can transmit exact GPS coordinates when needed.

As for the device itself, the Spot X features a 2.7-inch backlit display that’s visible even in sunlight. Moreover, it’s impact, dust, and water resistant, and you can easily connect it with a smartphone app via the Spot X app and Bluetooth. When fully charged you get up to 240 hours or 10 days of use. That’s with only the ten-minute tracking mode on. Moreover, it has a fully illuminated built-in QWERTY keyboard so you can type easily. It’s sleek, rugged, and meant to take a beating but still keep you connected and everyone informed.

Normally $250, you can grab it for $212 today saving $38. Wireless plans start at $11 per month, not including activation fees.

This popular Great Smoky Mountains trail will be closed for 18 months — where to hike instead
You won't see this Great Smoky Mountains Favorite for another 18 months. Here's why.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Laurel Falls Trail is a popular destination at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Seeing over 300,000 hikers annually, it's one of the park's most iconic trails. While Gatlinburg was largely spared by Hurricane Helene, Laurel Falls Trail has become unsafe due to loose, broken pavement and other safety hazards. This is largely because the trail hasn't been repaved at all since the trail was made in 1963. The National Park Service is committed to the safety of this trail, so the park has funded a rehabilitation project to give Laurel Falls Trail a well-deserved makeover.

This project will be extensive. The National Park Service reports that they will be making huge upgrades to the trailhead parking area, expanding it by about fifty parking spaces and adding a designated pathway with a guardrail to connect pedestrians to the trailhead. They will also be repaving all of the trails and installing new educational signage along the way to provide wayfinding, bear safety, and Leave No Trace guidance.

How to sharpen a knife for camping: The ultimate guide
Soon, you'll have the sharpest knife for your camping needs
A fresh-caught rainbow trout sits awaiting an adjacent knife on a cutting board

One of the most reached-for camping tools in my pocket is definitely my camping knife. I wouldn't dream of going camping without it, just because it's one of the most useful tools to have. Handy for any number of tasks, I use my camping knife for food prep, making kindling for a fire, and even first aid.

But when your camping knife is blunt, it can easily become a danger. While it might seem safer to have a less-pointy object around the camp, having a blunt camping knife can cause all kinds of problems like crushing and tearing instead of slicing cleanly. The amount of force you'll need to do the job could easily send you to the emergency room, so here's everything you need to know about how to sharpen a knife for camping.
