Spiced rums are one of those spirits which are enormously popular in simple mixed drinks like a rum and coke, but can be a bit of a challenge to mix cocktails with. As they tend to pack a big flavor punch and be somewhat sweet, you need to balance out all of that rum heft with other powerful ingredients like coffee, eggnog, or pineapple.

If you’re looking for some inspiration and some holiday fun, then the brand The Kraken has suggestions for how to mix its dark spiced rum into dark and moody cocktails. If you’re the kind of person who wishes Halloween was all year round, then you’ll love these playful takes on holiday drinks including a take on eggnogg, an Espresso Martini variations, and a dark and fruity option which makes use of activated charcoal for extra blackness and depth.

Depending on where you are in the world, the big party for Christmas might be held on December 25 -- or it might be on December 24, as people get together to slide into Christmas together. That's true here in Germany, and it's the case for many Latinx people too who get together to celebrate Noche Buena with plenty of good food and good company.

If you have plans to celebrate on Christmas Eve, then why not try a tequila-themed cocktail? The brand LALO tequila has shared some seasonal recipes including a simple but delicious highball specifically for Noche Buena, adding festive touches like rosemary and pomegranate to a base of blanco tequila and tonic water. There's also a touch of maraschino liqueur and some bitters in there for extra interest and flavor, making this the perfect light and sparkling way to welcome the festivities.

Strong, fiery, and coffee-inspired indulgence

As a coffee fanatic, it's safe to say the espresso martini is my favorite cocktail. In fact, I love the espresso martini so much that it even made an appearance as my signature cocktail at my wedding. However, my recent discovery of Spanish Coffee has changed my thoughts on the winner of the best coffee-inspired cocktail.

Unlike the martini, which typically uses vodka, the Spanish Coffee combines the flavors of rum, coffee, and whipped cream -- three things I love. Here's a super-simple Spanish Coffee recipe that makes for the perfect after-dinner drink or anytime "treat yourself" cocktail.

Coquito cocktails

When it comes to holiday drinks, you have your classic choices like eggnog, and I often reach for a warm winter cocktail like an Irish coffee. But in Puerto Rico there's another drink that embodies the taste of the season: the Coquito.

While people most often drink it around Christmas, this sweet drink is suitable for any time of year, and it'll be a hit with anyone who loves a delicious dessert cocktail. It's perfect for the cool winter evenings when I want something cozy, creamy, and satisfying to sip on as I huddle down against the snowy weather. So this year, why not try a Coquito cocktail instead of an eggnog?
