The new year is right around the corner, which means you’re likely stressing about what to wear to your event. The truth is that many people go to these NYE parties without realizing there is an etiquette. Some of them are come-as-you-are, and you can get away with wearing your sweater and jeans while drinking in the New Year. Others are more elevated, and you should be leveling up to toast the departing year with a little more of The Great Gatsby and a little less of Of Mice and Men.

I know it can be a bit stressful, so The Manual reached out to Michael Millie, the creative director of Perry Ellis to get his insight on how to dress for a New Year’s Eve event. Here’s what advice he has for anyone wanting to level up to Perry Ellis New Year’s Eve outfits.

Why is dressing for a New Year’s Eve party different than any other event?

Why is New Year’s different than the rest of the year? We go to parties and events all year round, especially during the holidays. As a matter of fact, this event is often the last of the season, so why do we feel we need this to be more of a cocktail attire look as opposed to anything else? Millie believes it is specifically a holiday for elevation.

“New Year’s Eve is a holiday where you can elevate your outfit. You can step out of your comfort zone with a statement jacket. Or keep it elegant with a classic tuxedo jacket. Remember, tuxedo jackets can be worn with more casual items to make you look less stuffy. With versatility like that, it’s great to shop where there is a selection of everything from smartly tailored suits to elevated casual looks that are perfect no matter how you choose to ring in the new year. But remember, if you’re going to make a statement, make sure it fits well. A relatively inexpensive trip for a simple alteration will make you look like a million bucks on the big night.”

How do we avoid trying too hard?

We have all known that guy, or maybe we were that guy at some point, who looks like they are screaming for attention. They want to be the center of everything and get a rise out of the people around them. Most of the time, that sentiment brings with it a garish look that is more flamboyant than stylish. But there is a trick to standing out without sticking out.

“You’ll know the moment you try something on. Does it make you feel cooler, more confident? Then you’re not trying too hard. It’s all about choosing comfortable pieces that elevate a look without making you feel like you are too far out of your comfort zone. When you are comfortable in the clothes you are wearing, you are going to wear them effortlessly, and that will automatically translate to your mood and presence in any room. And remember, you don’t have to wear a tie. You can even wear a tuxedo with one of our solid black tech-knit sweaters and look effortless.”

Does NYE have a color palette?

Red and green are perfect for your Christmas holiday looks. Orange and brown have Thanksgiving written all over them. And Halloween brings black and orange to every corner of the decoration stores. Even Valentine’s Day and Easter have color palettes attributed to them, but what about New Year’s? The truth is, there is a freedom to dressing for a New Year’s event because it is your time to embrace your favorite statement color. It’s a chance to stand out and be seen. Or, it offers you an opportunity to double down on your love for dark and elegant.

“Sure, bold statements in a holiday color palette will always be easier for the other people at the party to understand. But I say go with whatever color you know works with your skin tone. If you feel confident, you will look confident. And when in doubt, black works for everyone.”

What are the NYE go-to items?

Here it is, the chance to get some ideas to really stand out on New Year’s Eve. We all are likely not heading to a dress-up party, but some of us are looking forward to the opportunity to show up at the end of the year. Whether you are dressing up or down, here are some suggestions from Millie from Perry Ellis to get you looking your best.

“For those more upscale parties, I’d definitely recommend a peak lapel jacket like our gingham peak lapel sport coat or, if you’re taller, one of our black double-breasted suits. Also, a velvet dinner jacket is a great option. If you’re planning for a more casual affair, our plaid print shirt works perfectly. Or a nice sweater such as our ribbed mock neck quarter zip sweater is great as well.”

Probably the most versatile of the looks you can grab this year will be the velvet dinner jacket. Put this on with tuxedo pants and a bow tie, and you can live up to the black tie look. Dress it down with jeans, and you can be the laid-back style guru people look to for advice.

Bridge the gap between dress codes

The world of men's dress codes can be a deep dive into vague definitions and guesswork, as everyone has a different meaning for what constitutes certain levels. For instance, business casual is one of the most confusing in the list of dress levels, and some people allow some pretty casual items, like jeans or hoodies, in the workplace and call it business casual. Other places believe that you should be more elevated and it borders on the level of smart casual and can make it hard to discern what you can and can't wear. That is why it is always good to find ways to bridge the gap between the dress codes so you can stay ahead of the curve. The Sunspel Casual Tailoring collection allows you to bridge that vague gap between business casual and smart casual so you never have to worry about the boss pulling you into his/her office to ask you to do better.
Casual tailoring or elevated casual?

Sunspel was put on the map globally when Casino Royale hit the theaters, and Daniel Craig's James Bond filled out their Riviera Polo better than anyone ever had. Since then, they have redefined how we see many of our basics and many of the ways we wear them. In this collection, you see corduroy suits, long-sleeved polos, and cardigans that will keep you on the casual side and more comfortable than traditional tailoring. However, you will also stay elevated enough to keep yourself firmly in the dressed-up category. While these items are great for bridging dress code chasms, they are also some of your go-to items for first dates, especially if you don't know how elevated your date is getting.

The holidays are all about spending time with family. But it isn't like the rest of the year, where you meet at a restaurant, go to a movie, or meet at mom's so she can make your favorite food. It is about cooking for them and it is about focusing on them. Gifts and moments of gratitude is how we show our connection to each other at the end of a year, whether it is a trying one or a fantastic journey. But once the holidays are over, it is time to look at what we were gifted and what we still have on our lists. Whether you have gift cards or not, it may be time to pick up something for yourself. The Orlebar Brown Treat Collection is a carefully curated selection of favorites across their brand to give you something to reward yourself for the time you spent focusing on others.
From James Bond to out of left field

When you think about Orlebar Brown, you likely think of James Bond. And you should; they feature that awesomely cool swimsuit cover-up from Goldfinger (the blue terrycloth bit he wore when he first met the titular villain). Now, they even have a 007 collection focusing on all the James Bond-inspired products they offer. But there are also other items, like the pictured hoodie and the Oshibana print swim set that break out of the "classic basics" James Bond is known for. No matter which end of the spectrum you are in the market for, the Treat Collection has what you need to reward yourself for a successful holiday season.

Black, white, and everything in-between: SuitSupply sticks to the grayscale for the winter
Gray suiting, black ready to wear, and white overcoats have us loving winter
SuitSupply Gray overcoat

The winter is set to be cold and dreary like usual. The temperature drops, the days are shorter, and we can generally see a little less color. SuitSupply doubled down on the colors of winter when they added bright white cashmere to their fall and winter collection earlier this season. Now, one of the best suit companies online is sticking to that trend with as little color as possible going into the winter months. The SuitSupply Winter Colors consist of black and white, with some gray in between. If you are looking for versatile options that go with anything, a capsule look that will get you through the cold months, or simply want to keep it nice and simple moving into 2025, this collection will serve you well.
Gray suiting to white overcoats

Before you start to think that the blacks, whites, and grays are nothing but a boring lack of color, take a look at the offerings SuitSupply has before writing that off. The mark of a great brand isn't bright and flashy garments; it is the ability to elevate anything with impeccable tailoring and the right looks. The Sand Overcoat is a twist on the British Paletot or Guard's Coat. Making it white lets you stand out and make a statement without needing to have something garish. The Mid-Gray Relaxed Fit Roma Suit is another piece that, while seemingly basic, offers a more updated looser fit than we have grown accustomed to over the past two decades and will elevate your suit wardrobe with something to be worn all year round.
